Online Backup Service
Online backups by over 1 million people, must be working. I always try to find out how many others use a service before I try it myself. In the past I always tried new things without even thinking, but with back ups of my data it seems to be prudent to use what has been time tested and proven to work.

Recommendations
On the homepage they rotate six testimonials and on this page here you can see additional customer recommendations. Here is a quote from a gentleman from San Francisco, using Mozy backup for his business:

"My laptop is my business, so backing up my data is crucial. With Mozy, I never worry about extra fees or running out of space. It runs quietly in the background with no noticeable performance loss. Best of all, I'm confident a laptop crash won't be a disaster."

Home Backup vs. Online Backup
As a do-it-yourself'er I have tried home backup. First I tried backup tapes, a long time ago, and I never rotated tapes regularly. Next I hooked up an external drive, but realized that with automatic backup software I would set it to backup certain folders on my computer. Sure enough, I would create different folders that were not backed up and didn't realize they were not being backed up. Another reason that did not work well, is that over time I had multiple computers and so did my wife, and also my kids. Attaching an extra drive to each and setting up back up - well a real pain.

Next I tried NAS (Network Attached Storage), not the easiest thing to set up but the idea is great. You connect one hard drive to your network as opposed to one computer. For example, just plug into a router. Next all your computers need to see it and access it, you can create directories for each computer. The main issue is that each time a computer reboots you need to reconnect, forget to reconnect and there is no backup. That has been my biggest problem. That and the fact that I constantly have minor backup issues. I am not a network engineer and if anything goes wrong I can fix it but I have to read a bunch of documents to figure it out. Mozy - back up for me please! ;-)

Online Backup

Biggest worries are security. However they are used for over one million people for a reason. They transfer documents from your computer to their backup servers securely. The same 128-bit (SSL Encryption) that banks use, is used by Mozy during the process of backing up your computer. Once your information is transferred securely they then encrypt it. While it is stored it is encrypted with a 448-bit blowfish encryption - wow !

Safer with You or Them?
If you are like me, your data is safer there than on my home computer, I don't have a team of security experts locking down my house or computer. Take a look at their backup solutions, a very small price to pay for piece of mind knowing it is all safe. Losing a computer drive is like having your home burn down, everything lost and un-replaceable.

Mozy is an online backup service, safe and easy. Many have tried to launch a successful service but Mozy is the first to do it right. They obviously listened to what customers needed.

The service backs up your computer to a remote location, so when disaster strikes you will have all your data back. Here are some interesting features: backs up files whether you have them opened or closed, 128-bit SSL encryption while being backedup, 448-bit encryption while files are stored, it is automatic and more.
